Spectroscopic study of the effect of the proton irradiation on a spirocompound |

Three photochromic spirocompounds dispersed in chloroform and polymers were irradiated with proton beam to fluence raging from 1 x 1010 to 1 x 1012 ions/cm2. The radiation-induced changes in the photochromic compounds were investigated by UV/VIS, HPLC and in-situ color measurement. Both the closed forms and the open forms were influenced by the proton beam and the product of the decomposition reaction varied with not only the beam fluence but also the matrix. In chlorofom solutions, the absorption band of spirocompounds (λmax ≈ 350 nm) moves to 450-490nm and then further to 360-380 nm with increase in the beam fluence while there is negligible changes in the polymer matrix. The effects of the beam in the photochromic compounds were permanent. |
