Synthesis of hyperbranched polyesters has been accomplished by the polycondensations of AB2 type monomers, self-condensing ring-opening polymerizations (SCROP), and proton-transfer polymerizations (PTP). We report here on the novel synthetic method for highly branched α,β-unsaturated polyesters. Highly branched aliphatic polyesters were synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of AB2 type monomer, 5-acroyl-1-cyclooctene (ACO). Copolymerization of ACO with cyclooctene (CO) produced the copolymers with higher degree of branching compared to the homopolymers. NMR and DSC studies showed that the olefins of cyclooctenes were first opened and then the branches of the resulting polymers were formed via cross metathesis reaction. |
