A succinic acid-producing bacterial strain, 55E, was isolated from bovine rumen. The bacterium is a non-motile, non-spore-forming, gram-negative rod or coccobacilli. This is mesophilic and capnophilic and grows optimally at pH 6.0-7.5 under CO2-rich condition. Acid but no gas is produced from glucose. When 20 g/L glucose was used as a carbon source, 14 g/L succinic acid was produced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence indicates that the strain 55E is most closely related to the recently reclassified genus Mannheimia within the family Pasteurellaceae. The 55E seems to be a novel specie of the genus Mannheimia because of it is phylogenetically different from the known species of Mannheimia |
