In order to reduce biodiesel production cost, waste cooking oil was used as the feedstock of biodiesel in this study. Since waste cooking oil has a high acid value, alkali catalyst is not readily used due to the saponification of free fatty acids (FFAs) with alkali catalyst, resulting in low biodiesel conversion (~5%). When acid catalyst is used, much longer reaction time, high temperature and large volume of methanol are required, which substantially increases production cost. The reesterificatinon of waste cooking oil with crude glycerol from biodiesel plant led to as high as 83% of biodiesel conversion, and the glycerol generated during biodiesel production was recycled to facilitate another reesterification of FFAs. Therefore, we was able to produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil with high biodiesel conversion under alkali catalyst. |
