Synthesis and controlled-release properties of temperature-responsive halloysite/poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) particles |

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) particles containing surface modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) which have 500 to 1000nm length and 25-50nm inner diameter are proposed. This novel thermoresponsive microgel is characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and FT-IR. Micrometer-sized PNIPAM particles are synthesized by semi-batch process with existence of electrolyte and initiator. We use 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) which can be modified on the surface of HNTs and also used as comonomer of PNIPAM synthesis. The volume of HNT/PNIPAM particles can be changed by controlling temperature around 32ºC, resulting in controlled-release characteristics for various applications such as drug delivery. |
