There are many wearable devices for healthcare applications. Soft contact lens is especially noticeable because it has an efficient interface between a human eye and the electronic device. However, many smart contact lens remotely powered with inductive coupling-based technique. Wireless power transfer with inductive coupling has significant efficiency loss with distance and has potential hazard for eyes with continuous electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, we here developed flexible, bio-compatible fuel cell for smart soft contact lens using glucose in human tears. Human eyes have natural oxygen gradient which is high in the atmosphere and low in tears and it is important for glucose fuel cell to maintain low oxygen concentration at platinum anode because it can also catalyze oxidation which results severe power loss. With the prototype of glucose fuel cell imbedded in hydrogel contact lens, we obtained the power density of 5uW/cm2 using a physiological glucose concentration in tear. |
