The C/C composites made from various phenolic matrix precursors have been characterized by destructive evaluation technique (DET) for mechanical flexural properties and by non-destructive evaluation technique (NDET) for acoustic emission properties. It was found that the mechanical test results were correlated with those of the measured bulk density of composites, and were influenced by carbon char yields of the phenolic resin type used. From NDET results, the primary composite break or delamination properties were appeared to be largely dependent on the degree of adhesion at the interface between fiber and matrix.
