Bifunctional hydrogels composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NiPAAm) and sulfadimethoxine monomer (SDM) derived from sulfadimethoxine showed a pH/temperature induced volume-phase transition. The pH-induced volume-phase transition behavior of the bifunctional hydrogel occurred by ionization / deionization of SDM. In high pH region, ionization of SDM induced the swelling behavior of hydrogel and in low pH region, deionization of SDM induced the deswelling behavior of hydrogel. Also, the temperature-induced volume-phase transition behavior of the bifunctional hydrogel occurred due to the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) property of NiPAAm. The hydrogel swelled in spite of lower pH as the temperature decreased. Finally, new pH / temperature-sensitive hydrogel was suggested. |
