The hydrogel composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NiPAAm) and sulfadimethoxine monomer (SDM) was synthesized by radical polymerization with crosslinking agent. The hydrogel with optimal composition of NiPAAm and SDM displayed a pH / temperature-induced volume-phase transition, simultaneously. The pH-induced volume-phase transition behavior of the bifunctional hydrogels occurred by ionization/deionization of SDM. In high pH region, ionization of SDM induced the swelling behavior of hydrogel while in low pH region, deionization of SDM induced the deswelling behavior of hydrogel. Also, the temperature-induced volume-phase transiton behavior of the bifunctional hydrogels occurred due to the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) property of NiPAAm. The bifunctional hydrogel swelled in spite of lower pH as the temperature decreased. Finally, a new kind of bifunctional hydrogel able to respond to pH as well as temperature was introduced. |
