It is crucial to tailor surface chemical composition and topography for controlling interfacial properties including adsorption of biomolecules, and the adhesion between two objects. Self-assembled monolayers and surface-initiated polymerization have been widely used to control chemical composition and physical properties at surfaces and interfaces, providing the control of surface wettability and cell adhesion. Micro/nano-sized surface topography can also influence the properties. By using chemical, topographical, and the combined approaches, we have developed several functional surfaces including non-biofouling surface and the surface to accelerate neurite outgrowth. The mechanical interlocking-based biomedical tissue adhesive has also been designed. Herein, I will talk about how we have designed the functional surfaces/interfaces inspired by nature and how important to tailor chemical composition and topography to accomplish the functionalities for biomedical applications. |
