New type of embolic coil is introduced for treatment of cerebral aneurysms. Chemically cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel films were fabricated with dispersion of micro-size tantalum(Ta) particle in order to obtain radio-opacity. Glutaraldehyde (GA) was used as cross-linking agent. Swelling ratio of the Ta-PVA hydrogel film was measured and modified by varying concentration value of cross-linking agent. Bilayer was developed by overlapping two hydrogel films with different swelling ratio. Changing swelling ratio of Ta-PVA hydrogel composing bilayer makes it possible to produce coils of various sizes. Bending motion of coil was observed in both water and blood phases. After series of in vitro experiment examining usefulness of Ta-PVA hydrogel coil, in vivo experiment using a dog was successfully conducted. Feasibility of Ta-PVA metal-polymer composite hydrogel coil as a new embolic material was confirmed. |
