Abstract Novel soluble liquid crystalline polyesters (LCPs) have been synthesized for thermal interface material applications. Combining melting polymerization with solid state polymerization, it was found that molecular weight of polymers was obtained up to 72600. The resultant LCPs exhibited good thermal stability up to 350oC in TGA analysis. Remarkably, thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the LCPs was determined by thermal mechanical analysis (TMA), exhibiting values of 40 ppm and 260 oC, respectively. Small value of CTE and high Tg are desirable in thermal interface materials. Polymer structure was further characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). |
