Thin-film nanocomposite membranes (TFNs) have drawn intensive attention for the energy-efficient reverse osmosis (RO) desalination process. Although several studies on TFNs embedded with zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-8) of 3.4 Å pore aperture and high surface area have been reported, in-depth studies on the role of ZIF-8 nanoparticles inside the polyamide (PA) matrix have not yet been sufficiently studied. In this work, TFNs containing size-controlled ZIF-8 (60, 150, and 250 nm) were prepared and the particle size effects on TFNs were investigated. As a result, this study showed that interface area between ZIF-8 nanoparticles and PA matrix was varied with the particle size and affected the RO performances.
