Embedded Clay Thin Film Nanocomposite (TFN) Membrane for Desalination |

Thin film composite (TFC) and clay thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were prepared using interfacial polymerization technique based on conventional monomers of trimesoyl chloride and m-phenylenediamine to form the polyamide active layer on the polysulfone ultra-filtration membrane. Clay particles were introduced by a spray method after dispersion in hexane. Embedded clay TFN membranes are expected to improve the membrane performance by the path between polyamide matrix and clays. Clay TFN membranes were characterized by SEM and TEM to confirm the surface and cross-sectional morphologies and the surface (zeta) potential, water contact angles and surface roughness of the membranes were characterized to prove the main reason that clays improved salt water permeability. Furthermore, salt water permeation permeability and rejection were then measured to evaluate the membrane performance using cross-flow filtration system. |
