TiO2 nanocrystals with a regular shape have been synthesized using F as a surfactant which are in anatase phase with a bandgap of about 3.0 – 3.2 eV. Interestingly, the photocatalytic activity the TiO2 nanocrystals is strongly influenced by post-treatments such as annealing and chemical treatments in HF/NaOH. We present our results on changes of quantitative reaction rates depending on the post-treatments. In addition, we show that the type and density of defects in the bulk and surface vary during the thermal and the chemical treatments. Such experimental evidences lead us to a conclusion that defects in oxide nanocrystals dictate the fate of photoexcited hot carriers in photocatalytic reactions. |
