For automatically formation of vertical alignment (VA) of liquid crystal (LC), polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxanes (POSS) is one of the candidates. However, the pristine POSS can be easily aggregated with themselves and the aggregated POSS create some macro particles of generating light scattering in the host nematic (N) LC. To overcome this drawback, the cyanobiphenyl monosubstituted hybrid POSS (abbreviated as CMPOSS) was designed and synthesized for good soluability in host NLC. The CMPOSS exhibited an excellent dispersion in NLC media and formed the perfect VA of LC without conventional polymer-based VA layers. The cyanobiphenyl part chemically attached to the pristine POSS with an alkyl chain can improve the initial solubility and interaction with NLC media.
