Thermomechanical properties and shape memory effect of polyamide12/epoxy functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane nanocomposites |

Polyamide12(PA12)/epoxy functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (G-POSS) nanocomposites were prepared by a melt mixing an internal mixer, and their thermomechanical properties and thermally-triggered shape memory effects were investigated. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction and field-emission scanning election microscopy observations showed that POSS molecules formed nanocrystal domains and dispersed uniformly in PA12 matrix. Tensile test and dynamic mechanical analysis showed an increase in tensile strength and modulus with a decrease in elongation-at-break with increasing POSS content in the nanocomposites. The shape-memory properties of the nanocomposites quantified using thermomechanical tensile experiments showed that strain fixity rates are higher than 90% for all samples and strain recovery rates increased with increasing POSS content and reached as high as 91% at 10 wt% POSS content upon heating the temporarily fixed shape above its Tg. |
