Zincate Ion Crossover Reduction for Extending Cyclic Stability in Aqueous Secondary Zinc Air Batteries |

With high energy capacity and environmentally friendliness, and without the “danger package” of Li technology it is a fare question to ask the biggest setback of the Zn-air battery system. In this regard, the low cyclic stability of redox pair has been under significant study. Various reasons can be attributed to the lacking turnover number in charge-discharge regimes, yet in our study one factor stands out the most. Uncontrolled migration of zincate ions in the electrolyte leads to detrimental mechanisms towards the cell life. Increase in polarization due to the diffusion distance while catalyst poisoning by zinc oxide layer development are all pathways to battery failure. In this research our group sought out to mitigate such problems by a simple approach. By using a anion layer which selectively passes hydroxide ions but not zincate ions which has been applied to the separator, the cell cyclability has been drastically increased.
