Graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs), having a platelet morphology, have excellent thermal, electrical and mechanical properties. The incorporation of GNPs into a polymer can remarkably enhance thermal and mechanical properties of the polymer. To maximize the enhancement in the properties of the polymer, GNPs must be not only uniformly dispersed into but also strongly bonded to the polymer matrix. Therefore, in this study, amine-functionalized GNPs were synthesized by coupling 4,4’-methylene dianiline onto GNPs’ surfaces through a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The influence of introducing amine groups onto the GNPs’ surfaces was examined. FT-IR spectroscopy and TGA were used to confirm the amine-functionalization. Epoxy/GNPs nanocomposites were prepared and their physical properties were investigated by DSC, DMA and TMA. The amine-functionalization of GNPs improved a homogeneous dispersion in the epoxy matrix, resulting in improvement in the physical properties of the composites. |
