Myocardial infarction (MI) is the leading cause of death and one of the most common causes of death in the world. Nowadays, there has been an increasing interest in the development of gene therapy for cardiovascular disease, based on significant advances both in the understanding of the molecular mechanism of cardiovascular disease and in gene transfer technology. One of the requirements for successful gene therapy is the development of non-toxic and efficient carriers for gene delivery. Based on these considerations, several types of bio-reducible polymers containing disulfide bonds have been developed to enhance transfection efficiency of therapeutic genes. In addition, cell selective delivery of therapeutic genes is critical to achieve its maximum therapeutic potential in cardiovascular disease. |
