Isothermal Melt-Crystallization Kinetics and Crystalline Morphology of Poly(L-lactic Acid-co-Siloxane Rubber) |

Crystallization kinetics and crystalline morphology of poly(l-lactic acid) [PLA] is known to be affected by its composition or sample processing methods. In the present study, neat PLA and siloxane modified PLA (1, 3 and 5 wt.-% w.r.t. PLA content) were subjected to melt-crystallization at varying isothermal temperatures and their crystallization kinetics and morphology were studied using the transmitted light intensity and microscopic images as a function of time under the cross-polarization, respectively. A typical lamellar splay type spherulite was observed in the neat PLA sample which increased in size with increasing siloxane content. The changes in crystallization kinetics upon the inclusion of softer siloxane segments (Tg = -127 oC) acting as a plasticizer or spacer in the otherwise rigid and high modulus PLA segments (Tg = 90 oC) is studied in detail.
