To investigate the influence of the various morphologies and exposed facets on the acid-base properties of γ-Al2O3, XRD, TEM, ethanol TPD and ethanol dehydration reaction rate measurements were carried out. Different shapes of alumina were synthesized in platelet, platelet-hexagonal, and rod which possessed different exposed (100) facet ratio. XRD analysis and TEM imaging confirmed that synthesized alumina were γ-phase and had the morphological difference, respectively. The acid strength of alumina surface was significantly affected by the various morphologies and different exposed facet ratio, confirmed by the variation of the desorption temperature (at maximum rate of ethylene desorption, Td) in ethanol TPD. Finally, ethylene and ether formation rates, normalized with respect to the amount of dissociative ethanol (quantified by ethanol TPD), were inversely proportional to Td. |
