In this study, polymeric beads of sodium alginate and its blend with poly(vinyl alcohol), bentonite were prepared by crosslinking with Ca⁺² for release control of drug. Alginate is an nontoxic polysaccharide with favorable pH-sensitive properties that make it useful for the delivery of drugs. However the use of alginate for drug delivery is limit by drug leaching and rapid dissolution of alginate at the higher pH, which may result in lower entrapment difficiency and a burst in the release of entrapped drugs. To over these problems, we create a crosslinked alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol)/bentonite beads by combining bentonite with the alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. The crosslinking process was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). The swelling and pH-sensitive properties of the beads were investigated, and the drug loading and controlled release properties of the beads were also evaluated using diclofenac sodium as the model drug. |
