Isoprenoids are naturally occurring pigments composed of polymerized isoprene units (C5) and synthesized by many plants, algae, and microorganisms. These pigments have many diverse biological functions, such as coloration, photo protection, and precursors for many hormones. Some isoprenoids exhibit significant anti-carcinogenic activities and play an important role in the prevention of chronic diseases and enhancing immune response. lycopene not only has many beneficial points but also is a metabolite lead compound for many isoprenoid derivatives. For high-yield lycopene production, we cloned crtE, crtB and crtI genes from Erwinia uredovora, and constructed a plasmid pLyc184. To enhance the lycopene production, coexpression of dxs gene and high cell density culture were carried out. As a result, 1.2 milligrams per liter of lycopene were produced by fed-batch fermentation.
