The goal of this study is to fabricate of microcoils of poly(vinylcohol) (PVA) hydrogel and to evaluate their characteristics as embolic material. Diverse shape of embolizatic materials such as metal coils, liquid sclerosing agent, and polymer microspheres has been developed. They, however, have limitations of low blocking density and controllability. In this study, bi-layered coils consisting of different PVA hydrogel coils, having different cross-linking density, were fabricated to make up for the foregoing shortcomings. PVA hydrogel coils were synthesized by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a cross-linker and they were characterized in terms of their cross-linker contents and swelling ratio. These results demonstrated that size of various bi-layered coils was controlled by their cross-linking density which could be useful in providing higher blocking density. |
