Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) have advantages in environmental pollution, fire safety, and soil resistance compared with solvent-based polyurethane. Generally, WPUs have been limited by their raw materials and manufacturing process. However, problems related to properties and processing can largely be resolved by hybridizations with other materials. The nano-size silica particles were functionalized with allyl isocyanate and subsequently UV cured to synthesize the polyurethane-silica nanocomposites which were tested for mechanical, dynamic mechanical and contact angle. It was found that modified silica provides the composites with crosslinks which effectively reinforces the materials mechanically. With addition of silica particles to polymer chains, contact angle of the dispersion cast films was increased whereas water swelling was decreased. |
