Glucose-responsive liposomes bearing glucose oxidase-acidic copolymer conjugates |

Glucose oxidase (GOD) was conjugated with a copolymer of N-isopropylacrylamide, methacrylic acid, and octadecylacrylate. The copolymer-conjugated GOD (polym-GOD) was incorporated into egg PC or DPPC liposomal bilayer. When the liposomes were exposed to a high glucose concentration, the liposomal suspension became acidic since the glucose oxidase catalyzed the oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid. Accordingly, liposomes released their contents at a high glucose concentration. The enhance permeation of liposomal membrane is possibly because the polym-GOD contracts in acidic condition, imposing a stress on the membranes. |
