Polymer Grafted Nanoparticles in Block Copolymer Templates: Self-Consistent-Field Study |
초록 |
There has been an intense effort to use the block copolymer morphologies as scaffolds to position nanoparticles into ordered arrays for applications such as fuel cells and optical filters. B. J. Kim et al. [Langmuir, 23, 12693 (2007)] recently demonstrated that the position of nanoparticles in the AB block copolymer phase is controllable by grafting both A and B polymers onto the particle. We have developed the first quantitative theoretical method capable of examining the effect of grafted polymers on the positioning of nanoparticles in a block-copolymer lamellar phase, by implementing self-consistent field theory in multiple coordinate systems. Consistent with the experiments, we predict that when the two-polymer coated particle locates at the interface, the enthalpic energy gain associated with the chain rearrangement supercedes the entropy so that the particle effectively turns into a Janus particle. As a result, the particle shows a strong tendency to stay at the AB interface. |
