Preparation and Characterization of Sulfonated Polyimide-Clay Nanocomposite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) |

Sulfonated polyimide (SPI)-clay nanocomposite membranes were synthesized in the present work. The SPI-clay composites contain ODA-modified montmorillonite (organoclay), which increased hydrolytic stability of the membranes. The layered silicates of organoclay were intercalated by 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl 2,2'-disulfonic acid (BDSA) and 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy) phenyl]hexafluoropropane (HFBAPP), as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. A series of the SPI-clay nanocomposites having various ratio of organoclay were prepared and compared with pure SPI. The resulting materials were characterized for hydrolytic stability, proton conductivity and thermal stability. |
