There has been growing research on new synthetic methods for the preparation of well defined polymers with chain end fuctional group. These functional groups in polymers can participate chain extention, branching, crosslinking reactions. Interaction chromatography(IC) is very powerful to analyze polymers with functional end group because IC can separate polymers according to chemical composition, while the size exclusion chromatography(SEC) separate the polymers according to size. The peparation of hydroxyl terminated polymer is one of the well known functionalization reactions. In this study, hydroxyl terminated polystyrene(PS-OH) was prepared by anionic polymerization and reaction with propylene oxide. Strong interaction between hydroxyl group and stationary phase can separate PS-OH from same molecular weight of PS. Furthermore, two kinds of PS-OH which have different regiochemistry at the chain end were separated by IC, and each fractions were characterized by MALDI-TOF MS and NMR |
