Three dimensionally Structured Multimodal Porous Membranes Using Block Copolymer Nanoflange-Incorporated Inverse-Opal Templates |

We demonstrate a novel means to fabricate the hierarchically multimodal porous membranes by incorporating microphase separated block copolymer (BCP) nanoflanges into three-dimensionally interconnected inverse opal structures (3D-IO). To achieve this goal, the perpendicularly ordered cylindrical phase of polystyrene-b-poly(methylmethacylate) thin films are suspended and mechanically jointed at necking pores of 3D-IO polymeric template. In particular, we showed that nanoporous BCP nanoflanges are structurally manipulated by controlling the interfacial interactions between polymeric species and the strength of the confinement effect from macroporous 3D-IO templates. As a result, outstandingly enhanced membrane performance of high selectivity and permeation flux with an order of magnitude greater than those from conventional ultrafiltration membranes can be obtained. |
