Optical microscopy analysis was conducted to investigate the porosity on the surface of carbon block. Carbon block was manufactured by following step; selection of feedstocks: coke and binder pitch, Fabrication of artifacts (rod and block): extruding and press molding, and heat treatment and impregnation: carbonization and graphitization. Carbon block was analyzed to identify the mixing condition during kneading process. It was confirmed that coke particle (white) was covered with binder (white). After carbonization (900℃), binder was converted to coke-like structure. Optically analyzed images were edited to binary image to calculate the porosity based on the pixel statistics. In addition, 3D-rendering was performed to identify the roughness and depth of porosities generated during the carbonization. Porosity analysis method obtained by optical microscopy with image calculation is a potential analytical tool for investigating the porosity related to structure. |
