Redox flow batteries (RFBs) which require different two redox couples dissolved in electrolytes are one of the candidates for energy storage systems. Among them, vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) with low cross-over contamination and long lifetime has been expected as the best RFBs. However, sluggish VO2+/VO2+ cathode reaction reduce the voltage efficiency. Thus, new material that can enhance the cathodic reaction is necessary. Here, mesocellular carbon foam (MSU-F-C) which has large and opened pores were synthesized and used as cathode material in VRFB and compared with commercial carbon. Additionally, mesocellular carbon foam with catalysts were synthesized, too. As a result, MSU-F-C has increased the reactivity even without additional catalyst, due to its high surface area which can increase the reaction sites and large, opened pores which can enhance active material diffusion. Additional catalyst also lowered cathode overpotential and resistance. |
