It was reported that fermentation products such as acetone and alcohols could be condensed each other to high carbon-number ketones and the corresponding alcohols using metal supported hydrotalcite catalysts. Our recent study revealed that Cu/CeO2-ZrO2 catalysts with different Ce/Zr ratios showed a fairly good activity in the condensation of acetone and butanol. However, the selectivity to double-alkylated product, 6-undecanone, needed to be improved. Thus, the Cu loading method has been changed from impregnation to co-precipitation. As a result, Cu-CeO2 catalysts showed the highest product yield and the improved selectivity to 6-undecanonoe. Further experiments will be conducted to optimize the Cu/Ce ratio. All the Cu-loaded catalysts will be characterized using XRD, N2O-RFC, Raman and XPS spectroscopy, and CO2-TPD in order to understand the interaction of Cu with Ce and thereby correlate between the key catalysts property and activity results. |
