Since the advent of nanotechnology, virtually all of scientific and engineering communities have envisioned revolutionary design concepts, which are dependent on the reduction of mass, power requirements, and size of components, accompanied by an increase in the intelligence of these components. Carbon nanotubes have been the most popular potential candidate for enabling this paradigm shift in design concepts. However, many challenges in translating the intrinsic properties of a nanotube into practical applications needed in the future design concepts still remain. In this presentation, the key issues and current trends in the R&D of SWNT polymer composites will be addressed. Also, this talk will highlight an effective approach to tailoring the physical properties of multifunctional nanocomposites by controlling nanotube treatment, concentration, and degree of alignment. A discussion of the potential applications for multifunctional structural composites will also be given. |
