Aromatic polyimides are well known as highly heat resistant materials which have been used in many applications due to their exceptional mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties. Polyimides are often insoluble and infusible in their fully imidized form, leading to processing difficulties. To overcome these problems, much research effort has been focused on the synthesis of soluble polyimides in a fully imidized form without deterioration of their own excellent properties. One of the successful strategies for soluble polyimide synthesis is introducing pendent groups unsymmetrically in polyimide backbones. Due to the unsymmetrical structure, the solubility of the resulting polymers was enhanced dramatically, and we noted that the LCST behavior of the polyimide in organic media. Details of the strategy for soluble polyimides from logically designed unsymmetrical diamine monomers with trifluoromethyl groups will be introduced and discussed. |
