Here we demonstrate the first organic sol-gel process in which tetra-functional organic molecules with tetrahedral geometry are polymerized into 3-d networks in the solution phase analogously to the sol-gel synthesis of inorganic oxides. The resulting organic networks exhibit microporocity and can be produced in the form of free-standing films, coatings on solid supports, and nanoparticles with various surface-functionalities. The functionalized nanoparticles networks are readily dispersed in the other polymeric matrices to yield nanocomposite materials. Considering the possibility of facile control over a variety of chemical functional group, size, and geometry of the repeating molecular units, the organic sol-gel system is promising for the development of storage media for gaseous fuels and green house gases, and efficient membranes for purification of gas or liquid molecules. |
