Biological CO2 conversion process using microalgae was demonstrated as an attempt to combine CO2 treatment and bioenergy production. 10-ton scale pilot-scale BECCS plant was constructed nearby CHP plant for direct flue gas treatment. Despite of fluctuation in daily and seasonal light intensity and temperature, annual production of microalgae biomass could be estimated from assessing monthly biomass production. A profit from process operation was obtained by biodiesel, bioethanol, protein, and high value carotenoid astaxanthin. Increase in economic feasibility could be obtained by decrease the expanse in culture process, optimal reactor design development and increase the yield of products by optimizing downstream process. Also, considering various climate condition and flue gas condition, different microalgae strains were tested in outdoor condition. In conclusion, technical development and operation of 10-ton pilot scale plant will provide basic data for designing industrial scale process. |
