P(aryl ether amide) containing o-nitroanilide moiety in the main chain was synthesized by SNAr reaction and characterized. Interestingly, solutions of the polymer in polar aprotic solvents such as DMF, DMSO, NMP, and DMAc were immobilized at low concentration (<1wt%) when the solutions were cooled to room temperature. 1H NMR study revealed that physical gelation of polar aprotic solvents is induced by the transformation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in a single o-nitroanilide into intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the amides in the main chain. The large number of hydrogen bonding sites in a single polymer chain also exhibited thixotropic behavior of the physical gel. |
