제목 Encapsulation of liquid crystal in polyurethane/polyurea microcapsules for PDLC
초록 For polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), liquid crystal is encapsulated in a solid polymer matrix with matched refractive index. PDLC is applicable in electro-optic devices since it can control transparency by electric field. At ‘off-state’, LCs are randomly oriented, to become milky white by scattering visible light. On the other hand, at ‘on-state’, when electric field is applied, LCs are aligned and become transparent. For PDLC, narrow distribution of size and high stability of PDLC particles are important issues. We have fabricated PDLC particles with narrow size distribution where LC particles are encapsulated in a polyurethane/polyurea shell with a Shirasu Porous Glass (SPG) membrane. Fabricated PDLC particles were analyzed to measure the size distribution. Optimization of the process to enhance the yield and to narrow down the size distribution of PDLC particles will be discussed.
