Synthesis of TiO2-antimicrobial polymer nanoparticles using a surface-initiated photopolymerization and their synergetic antibacterial performances |

Novel antibacterial TiO2-poly[2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate] (TiO2-poly(TBAM-co-EGDMA)) core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized by surface-initiated photopolymerization on TiO2 surface under UV light. The synthesized TiO2-poly(TBAM-co-EGDMA) core/shell nanoparticles demonstrated high antibacterial efficiency (95.7%) against gram-positive S. aureus in the dark condition. Furthermore, under UV irradiation, It was showed that the TiO2-poly(TBAM-co-EGDMA) core/shell nanoparticles had more improved inhibition of bacterial propagation against gram-negative E. coli and gram-positive S. aureus than the bare TiO2 nanoparticles owing to the synergetic antimicrobial activities of UV-driven disinfective TiO2 core and antimicrobial polymer shell. It is expected that the TiO2-poly(TBAM-co-EGDMA) core/shell nanoparticles will be applied to various antimicrobial applications not only in the dark system but also in the light-activated system. |
