Crude glycerol is a major by-product in the production of biodiesel and consists of a huge amount of impurities that inhibit its direct use in industry. The transformation of crude glycerol into useful compounds such as 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) through bioconversion is a very interesting method. In this study, crude and pure glycerol were compared to produce 1,3-PDO (15.4 ± 0.8: 11.4 ± 0.1 mmol / l, crude: pure) in minimal media. In addition, the BES and ZVI were compared using the electrochemically active microorganism K. pneumoniae L17. The conversion of crude and pure glycerol under electrode and iron-based conversion was investigated for 1,3-PDO production, metabolic migration, and cell growth. The BES based conversion produced 32.6 ± 0.6 mmol/l of 1,3-PDO. This study suggests the more most effective biological production of 1,3-PDO using crude glycerol with no requirement of purification or treatment process for crude glycerol. |
