Mechanical properties of silicone rubber/clay composites |

Silicone rubber was compounded sodium montmorillonite (MMT) and MMT modified with a silane compound bearing tetra sulfide group (MMTS4). Effects of incorporation of the fillers on the mechanical properties of the silicone rubber composites were investigated. Not only tensile strength and elongation at break but also tear strength was significantly raised as a result of incorporation of MMTS4. The cross-linking density determined from the degree of swelling in toluene revealed that the improvement of the mechanical properties of silicone rubber/MMTS4 did not come from increase in the cross-linking density but from enhanced compatibility between the components.
