Characterization of Electrochemical Properties of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Employing Solid State Polymer Electrolytes |

Polymer electrolytes of PEO/PEGDME/XI/I2 for solid state DSSCs were employed where X is either K or 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium (MPI), and their electrochemical properties were characterized with the electron diffusion phenomenon through TiO2 layer, effective diffusion of I-/I3- in bulk phase, and charge transport at the counter electrode. The electron diffusion coefficients through the TiO2 semiconductor layer were 1~2 x 10-4 and 7~8 x 10-5 cm2/s, respectively, for KI and MPII. The electron diffusion lengths were obtained 19.29um for KI and 7.70um for MPII. The apparent diffusion coefficient of I3- in the polymer electrolyte employing KI was 3 times higher than that employing MPI, while the charge transfer resistances at the counter electrode were 328Ω for KI and 20Ω for MPI. It was therefore concluded that the effects of electrons and ions diffusion on the cell performance in solid state DSSCs were compensated each other, resulting in similar overall energy conversion efficiency. |
