Allergenic fungi often cause allergies and various diseases such as mycosis and pneumonia. Several conventional systems for fungi detection including culturing, DNA sequencing and immunoassay have been exploited. However, these conventional methods are time-consuming, high cost and not user-friendly. In this study, we demonstrate spore-binding peptide modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are potent colorimetric sensors to detect Aspergillus niger (A. niger) which is one of the most prevalent airborne allergenic fungus in daily life. The conjugation of spore-specific peptide with AuNPs was confirmed by XPS and zeta potential analysis. This peptide-AuNPs showed rapid binding to spores of A. niger, which could be confirmed via observing the color change of the peptide-AuNPs suspensions and measuring absorbance of the nanoparticles. We believe that the colorimetric sensor based on AuNPs has a great potential as cost-effective, user-friendly and rapid system for allergenic fungus detection. |
