Morphology of Star-shaped PS-b-PMMA Comprised of Different Morphology of Linear Block Copolymer |

Star-shaped polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymer (PS-b-PMMA) was synthesized by using α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) as a core of the star-shape. Hydroxyl groups in the α-CD were substituted with bromine by esterification and it was used for atom transfer radical polymerization. We found that the number of bromine substituted arms per one α-CD was higher than 16 measured by NMR and NALDI-TOF. We controlled the molecular weight and block compositions of block copolymer. Morphology of Star-shaped block copolymer was characterized by TEM and small angle X-ray scattering. We could observe that range of nanostructures of Star-shaped block copolymers was different from that of linear block copolymer. Also, we cut star-shaped block copolymers by hydrolysis of ester group linking cyclodextrin and linear block copolymer to compare morphologies. We could observe that morphology of cut linear block copolymer was different from Star-shaped block copolymer. |
