It is important to diagnose tumor accurately for better life quality of tumor patients. For synchronous diagnosis and treatment, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have been considered as a potential agent. But it is difficult to get good therapeutic results because of some limitations, such as poor solubility and low targeting efficacy. In this study, SPIONs were prepared by coating with targeting moiety and photosensitizer conjugated hydrophobic polymer-iron chelator to overcome those limitations. Targeting moiety could be internalized selectively through their specific receptors expressed on cells and photosensitizer enabled tumor cell death by toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon laser irradiation. In virtue of polymer coating on surface of SPIONs, they showed high water solubility and internalized via receptor-mediated endocytosis. In conclusion, polymer coated-SPIONs can be applied to various tumor theragnosis based on their multiple functions |
