Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of the mechanical engineering, computer engineering and others. Artificial skin is a subject of the robot researches and has encouraged extensive research toward developing the methods of facile imitation of the appearance and expression of skin. For mimicking the appearance, the strain of artificial skin should be controllable. In this study, we fabricated thermo-responsive artificial skins using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and polydimethyl siloxane (Ecoflex). Our artificial skin is composied of PNIPAm hydrogles having aligned micropores and infiltrated Ecoflex. The aligned micropores of PNIPAm was prepared by directional melt crystallization of water, and subsequently Ecoflex 0030 was infiltrated to the porous PNIPAm. As the result, we demonstrated the thermo-responsive properties of PNIPAm/Ecoflex composites, which could be used as artificial skin for future robotics which could mimic the appearance and expression of human skins. |
