Fluorocarbon Oil Reinforced Triple Emulsions for Encapsulation and Retention of Small Molecules |

There remains an unmet need to develop a new emulsion platform that allows cargo diversity as well as retention of encapsulated actives until their release is triggered. Introducing a fluorocarbon oil layer within an emulsion drop that separates the cargo from the polymeric shell provides a possible solution to these challenges. Here we report fluorocarbon oil reinforced triple emulsion drops that enable encapsulation of a broad range of cargoes in a single platform. In addition, we demonstrate that the fluorocarbon oil within the emulsion drop acts as an effective diffusion barrier as well as a non-adhesive layer, enabling highly efficient encapsulation and retention of small molecules. |
