Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) at metal surfaces has gained much attention since it can convert CO2 to value-added chemical fuels and feedstocks using renewable energy resources. CO is particularly interesting because of large chemical commodity markets. Recent techno-economic analysis indicates three important technical parameters (that are low overpotential, high production rate, and high selectivity) for commercialization of CO production by electrochemical CO2RR. Here, we present our recent approaches to address these challenges in CO2RR by 1) nanostructuring Au for CO2RR selectivity and 2) using gas diffusion electrodes to achieve 100 mA/cm2 of CO2RR current density. Detailed roles of nanostructures, active sites and reaction environment on CO2RR will be discussed. |
